At the start of each new academic year, schools everywhere prepare to welcome students, parents, and staff alike. TISA, home to the “TISA TITANS,” is no different.

Every year, the start of the school year includes student body elections and planning for events that foster school spirit and unity. This year, after weeks of preparation, TISA held its first whole-school event of the year, “Return of the TITANS.” This after-school gathering was filled with high-energy football games for both high school and middle school students, various fun activities, and an array of food stalls. TISA students were thrilled by the friendly football competitions, especially the highly anticipated game between students and teachers.

This year, however, there was an added element that made the event even more special. Inspired by a unique suggestion from our director, Dr. Angela Romney, and with the support of our whole school action coordinator, Rebecca Greenall, the event incorporated inclusive sports. At first, our team was unsure about how to implement this idea and what the outcome might look like. Dr. Romney, along with Mr. Kimball Romney, who also serves as a DP Psychology teacher and primary counselor, joined a Student Council (StuCo) meeting to facilitate discussion and share ideas on promoting inclusivity.

Our StuCo executive team, in collaboration with TISA Action Network (TAN), embraced the challenge and began working to bring this vision to life. Rebecca Greenall reachedcout to Danceability Azerbaijan, an inclusive dance company, who graciously accepted the invitation to participate. The visiting athletes were paired with TISA students, creating a supportive and encouraging environment where everyone could fully engage and share in the excitement.

The event was a resounding success, leaving an unforgettable impact on all who participated. The joy and gratitude expressed by our visitors, their parents, and their teachers was heartwarming and inspiring. TISA students and staff alike were touched by the positive energy and spirit of inclusivity that filled the day.

The event underscored the power of inclusion, demonstrating how even a small act can bring immense joy and foster a deeper sense of connection and understanding within our community. “Return of the TITANS” was not just a celebration of school spirit; it was a step forward in TISA’s journey to embrace and support diversity in all its forms. Thisexperience has left our students and staff motivated to continue building an inclusive community where everyone can thrive, and we look forward to expanding these initiatives in the future.
