This year, as our Grade 5 students embarked on their PYP Exhibition journey, the Grade 5 team were interested in ways to use AI to assist in our learning. In particular, we wanted to think of ways to put AI safely and responsibly into the hands of our learners.

Our school has been exploring the use of ‘Magic School’ – a teacher and student focused AI platform. The results of this exploration have been transformative in the way that the team of teachers have thought about the PYPX, but also the students in their thinking about their chosen passion. Through experimentation (we are by no means experts!) Magic School AI has helped students refine their inquiries by generating thought-provoking questions, summarizing research notes, and prompting them to investigate their passion from different perspectives.

Through the use of Magic School, students have been learning about how to create good prompts for the AI, responsible use of the tools, as well as being critical of the tool itself, noting its limitations and mistakes.

Beyond research, Magic School AI has also supported students in structuring their presentations, suggesting interactive ways that their audience can engage with them. This led to many games, quizzes and hands–on elements in this year’s Exhibition. The integration of AI into the PYP Exhibition has not only enhanced the learning process but has also sparked discussions about the responsible and ethical use of AI in education, not just among the staff, but also with and between the students – an important conversation for our
young learners.
