The International School of Belgrade (ISB) has started a number of initiatives to address the unique challenges faced by students in an international school setting. Recognising the increasing prevalence of mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression among adolescents, ISB has aligned its initiatives with global best practices. We prioritise prevention, early intervention, and holistic support, ensuring that students have access to resources that promote their well-being. Through school-wide initiatives, counseling services, student support programs, and community partnerships, ISB has established a framework for mental health care within an educational setting.

A key element of ISB’s mental health program is fostering a supportive school environment where open conversations about mental health are encouraged while maintaining confidentiality. Mental health education is embedded into the curriculum, particularly through Personal, Social, Health, and Emotional (PSHE) education. Beyond the classroom, extracurricular activities and sports help students build emotional resilience. Parental involvement is also a priority, with workshops and collaborative initiatives designed to strengthen family support networks. Additionally, ISB has partnered with local mental health professionals to ensure that students have access to specialised care when needed. These initiatives help students navigate academic pressures, cultural transitions, and social integration challenges.

ISB’s approach includes a structured intervention system that enables early identification of mental health concerns and provides clear crisis response protocols. Teachers and staff receive Safeguarding training to recognise warning signs, while a dedicated emergency response team is prepared to address various situations. The school’s safeguarding policies reinforce its commitment to student well-being by integrating mental health support into its broader child protection initiatives. ISB emergency response procedures ensure that students in distress receive immediate assistance and appropriate follow-up care.

By taking a proactive and collaborative approach, ISB seeks to successfully integrate mental health support into many aspects of school life. Grounded in empathy, responsibility, and excellence, ISB remains dedicated to promoting student well-being and ensuring that all learners have the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
